SPECIFICATION: The
#23043 Barnes type dehorner has 13" varnished hardwood
handles with high grade steel heads attached by steel rivets
and drive screws. The heads are nickel plated to aid in the
prevention of oxidation. The cutting blades are heat treated
for long lasting sharpness. The #23044 Barnes type dehorner
has 14 gauge high grade tubular steel handles, 17" in
length with rubber grip handles. The heads are manufactured
with high grade steel to aid in the prevention of oxidation
and both the heads and handles are nickel plated to aid in
the same. The heads are heat treated and attached to the
handles with steel rivets. Repairs are available upon
request.
OBJECTIVE: To eliminate
the growth of horns which can be a danger as animals mature.
In most breeds, it reduces the live market value when horns
are present.
APPLICATION: The
Barnes type dehorners are an excellent tool for calves at
weaning time (4-6 months of age) up to about one (1) year of
age. If you are dehorning during fly season, or another
vector type insect season, you need to have a fly spray or
antiseptic available. The instruments to have at your
disposal might be artery forceps, hemostats or surgical
clamps. Many times, when the cattle are dehorned, the artery
is clasped between the thumb and forefinger, twisted and
held for a few seconds, released and returned back into the
cranium. Check to make sure the bleeding is halted before
releasing the animal. Apply any antiseptic at this time. If
bleeding persists, consult a veterinarian. |
